In 1999, owner Wayne Pierce asked Nelson & Haworth to add nine holes to the oldest nine-hole course west of the Mississippi. Up to that time, the course was strictly a facility for the military personnel of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, which became victim to the US Military reduction of military bases.

Twelve holes were constructed within the existing property and the results have been very favorable among golfers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The course features expansive views to Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and Contra Costa Counties. Emphasizing low green fees, the state of the art facility was constructed to hold large golf outings and play in all weather when many of the Bay Area golf courses would be closed. It was quickly recognized as one of the best values in Northern California.
